What are CVC words?
CVC Words are words made up of consonant – vowel – consonant. An example of this is “tap” where the consonants are /t/ and /p/ and the vowel /a/ is in the middle of the 3-letter word. This vowel is also known as a short vowel sound as the sound is quick and we don’t hold onto the sound of the letter, like we do with the name of the letter a ‘aaaaaaayyyyy’. Most 3-letter words have a short vowel sound in the middle.
Once children have been taught the initial code (the letter sounds of the alphabet) they need time to practice segmenting sounds and blending them to read real words. This practice helps the reading of CVC words to become automatic.
Matched with an image, each word has individual sounds said separately and then blended together from left to right – in the same way we encourage children when they learn to read in English.
