Educational resources
Serena produces educational videos and resources to support young learners in preschool and school settings, as well as those learning from home.
Confidence working with the 44 sounds of the English language is a key outcome of the early years of schooling. However, introducing all 44 sounds at once can overwhelm young learners. For this reason, both preschools and primary schools begin by teaching letter names and initial sounds as part of a carefully scaffolded sequence over time.
By the end of the first year of primary school, or earlier, children are expected to know the letter names and initial sounds of the alphabet, providing a strong foundation for identifying, blending and using sounds in early reading and writing.
While many resources are available, few are aligned with the Science of Reading (SoR). This video is designed to keep learning calm and intentional, giving children time to listen, watch and copy each letter name and sound. Familiar objects, simple visuals and minimal distractions mirror the experience of a real classroom.
Use these videos regularly as part of your daily phonics routine to support confidence with letter names and initial sounds.
Join experienced early years teacher Miss Merry on a calm and engaging adventure through the sounds of the alphabet! This version is specially designed for young learners, including those who are neurodivergent or prefer a quieter environment, ages 2-8. In this video, we explore the letter sounds (not names) of A-Z, with minimal background noise and soothing animal visuals.
The Totally Roarsome Phonics video series links with the current evidence in the Science of Learning and Reading.
The original (and first of its kind) children-facing YouTube video for preschool children was produced in 2013 and has supported both parents and teachers with the teaching of the initial sounds of the alphabet. Below is the short version and longer version (to support the teaching of handwriting). With both videos amassing 155,00 views since its release, these videos have both parents and teachers coming back time and time again to support young children with emergent reading skills.
